2006 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine Enthusiast 90 points
An enjoyable Cab for its lush mouthfeel and ample flavors of blackberries, black currants, cherries, spices and smoky oak. Feels rich and savory all the way through. The tannins certainly are present, but they're refined. Drink now-2015

2006 Lail Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint
Robert Parker 90 points
Another new offering is the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint, which is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot aged in 50% new oak. It is meant to be a reasonably good value by the standards of Napa Valley Cabernet, and it fulfills that task admirably. The deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by notes of chocolate, black currants, earth, and spice. Medium to full-bodied and soft, it is ideal for drinking over the next decade.

2006 Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon
Robert Parker 90 points
The sleeper 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon offers impressive notes of creme de cassis, camphor, cedar, and subtle roasted herbs. Deep, full-bodied, and rich with velvety tannin and an opulent personality, this beautiful 2006 can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years. Moreover, it's a relative bargain in the luxury priced Napa sweepstakes.

2009 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner at Gary's Wine & Marketplace NJ Wine Store

Wine Advocate 90 Pts and Tremendous Value from Italy

$1/Bottle Shipping on a Case
Price: $17.99
Reg: $22.99
ON SALE!

At a recent dinner featuring a great lineup of wines like Solaia, Quintarelli Amarone, and Shafer Hillside Select there was another wine that shined that isn't nearly as popular or similarly priced. It was the white wine that started the evening off, the 2009 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner. The perfect crisp white with great flavors of white fruits, with minerality and good weight as well.

I know what you're saying. What is Kerner? Kerner is a hybrid grape produced by a crossing of Trollinger (a red grape variety) and Riesling. Think of it as a Riesling with a bit more character and more full-bodied.

Anyway, it's a great bottle of wine that needs to be tasted to understand just how good it is. How many of us have actually tasted a Kerner before? Try this delicious example of Kerner and add another variety to your lifetime list of grapes tasted.

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 90 Points -- The 2009 Kerner is another fabulous wine from Abbazia di Novacella. The taut, mineral laced Kerner caresses the palate with expressive aromatics, chiseled fruit and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.These entry-level, unoaked whites from Abbazia di Novacella in the Valle Isarco deliver plenty of bang for the buck.

2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia at Gary's Wine & Marketplace NJ Wine Store

http://www.garyswine.com/fine_wine/italy/13928.html

7 points and One of Tuscany's Best
Free Shipping on 6-Packs

James Suckling on the 2007 versus the 2006 vintage in Tuscany: "The 2006s seemed a little more aromatic, with finer tannins and a racier, more refined character overall, while the 2007s were rich and powerful, with a riper and rounder mouthfeel. I think, if I remember correctly, the growing season was a little hotter in 2007 and the harvest for most producers was a little earlier. So that's why they may seem a little more concentrated with riper tannins than the 2006."

The Wine Spectator rated the 2007 Ornellaia at 97 points, their highest rating for Ornellaia since the 2004, which was the #7 wine in the Top 100 of 2007. It's also higher than the 1998 they ranked as the #1 wine in the Top 100 of 2001. Where will the 2007 finish up in the ranking this year?

We tasted the 2007 Ornellaia a few weeks back and it was showing much more concentration than the 2006 did when we tasted it a year ago. It is not as tannic or as tightly structured as the 2006, but it certainly is a great Ornellaia that probably will drink better than the 2006 at a much earlier age. It would be best to wait for a couple of years before opening the 2007, if you can resist the temptation to drink it right now. Then, drink the 2007 while you wait for the 2006 to mature in the bottle.

Wine Spectator 97 Points -- A wine that does everything right and puts it in beautiful balance. Full-bodied, yet reserved, silky and elegant, with wonderful fruit and friendly tannins. Best after 2012. -JS

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 93 Points -- The 2007 Ornellaia is remarkably open and accessible, very much in keeping with the personality of the vintage. Clean, minerally notes frame a core of silky, perfumed dark fruit, mocha, spices, licorice, grilled herbs and leather that impresses for its exceptional length. The 2007 is not a big, massive Ornellaia, but rather a wine built on elegance and finesse, both of which are on full display. The 2007 should drink well with a minimum of cellaring, but whether it will make old bones remains a question mark at this point. The 2007 Ornellaia is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

Buy Wine 2009 Domaine des Grandes Perrieres Sancerre at Gary's Wine & Marketplace

http://www.garyswine.com/fine_wine/france/09842.html

WS 90pts Best Sancerre at Gary's Under $20 $1/Btl Shipping on a 6-Pack
Price: $14.99
Reg: $19.99
ON SALE!

We first discovered the Domaine Grandes Perrieres Sancerre from Jerome Gueneau in the spring of 2009 while in France. This was a real find! We brought in the 2008 last July and blew through almost 75 cases in a month.

We decided this year to double our purchase of the 2009 so it would be in the stores throughout the summer. We just received a new shipment and it's still just $14.99 per bottle on sale! Even with the new shipment we've already purchased an additional shipment to arrive in early September.

We've mentioned in the past that this was a producer under the radar. Well, it's no longer under the radar as the Wine Spectator recently rated it 90 points. The price is the still the same though.

Jerome founded the domaine in 1993 consisting of eight hectares of vineyards. Some of the vines are as old as 45 years of age. The estate is located in Chavignol and Sury-en-Vaux, known for producing a more minerally styled Sancerre due to the rocky soil.

"Very fresh, clean, and crisp. Very round fruit flavors of lemon-lime, even some peach on the mid-palate. Lots of minerality balanced with good acidity yet keeping all of the wonderful fruit through the long finish. Very well-made Sancerre at an amazing price!"

Jon Visser, Wine Buyer 4 stars

Wine Spectator 90 Points -- Pure and chiseled, featuring a lovely core of lemon verbena and straw woven with additional gooseberry, herb and flint notes, followed by a long, fine-tuned finish. Drink now through 2011. 5,000 cases made.

Finding a 91 point Cab that sells for less than $20 these days is difficult to say the least. We tasted one recently and it definitely lives up to its 91 point score. And just to let you know how difficult it is finding a 91 point Cabernet under $20... only four under $20 Cabs including the Montes Alpha 2007 have been rated 91 points or higher by the Wine Advocate in the past three years!

The grapes come from "La Finca de Apalta" Estate, in the Apalta Valley, reputed to be the best for red wines in Chile.

A velvety, delicious Cabernet
that you can just pop and enjoy any night of the week!

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 91 Points

The 2007 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon raises the bar considerably. A glass-coating opaque purple, it has an excellent bouquet of toasty oak, tobacco, espresso, and blackcurrant. With good richness, excellent depth, and a firm structure, it will evolve for several years and drink well through 2019.

Buy Wine 2005 Villa I Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino at Gary's Wine & Marketplace NJ Wine Store

One of 05's Highest-Rated Brunellos Found Only at Gary's
Free Shipping on 6-packs
Price: $49.99
Reg: $62.99
ON SALE!

James Suckling of the Wine Spectator rated 110 Brunellos from the 2005 vintage and the 2005 Villa I Cipressi Brunello di Montalcino was the highest rated!

... And we now have it in stock!
We loved the 2004 and in our opinion it's been flying under the radar for too long .. well not anymore. This 94 point, full bodied and elegant wine is now available to you AND you can only find this spectacular wine at Gary's!

Villa I Cipressi is located near the town of Montalcino, the operation started out by producing several different types of honey about twenty years ago. The apiculture business expanded to include honey-based products (liqueurs, sweets, cookies) before adding legumes, olive oil, and eventually wine.

This region of Tuscany is known for its warmer climate, producing wines that are bigger bodied, denser and packed with flavor. The warmth also provides winemakers more assurances that each year sangiovese grapes will indeed ripen and produce wines of nuance and complexity.

Wine Spectator 94 points - Fabulous aromas of flowers, incense, Indian spices and dark fruits. Full-bodied, with polished, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Layered and concentrated, with a dense midpalate of fruit. Elegant and full of finesse. A small producer on a roll.

Earlier this year, Gary and a few of our buyers sat down to a very traditional Italian dinner with the importer of several of our Italian wines. As usual, he had some good Brunellos and Chiantis for us to taste, but the one wine that really caught our attention was the 2004 Querciarossa Fulgente Rosso from Tuscany.

It was an impressive blend of Italian varietals (Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Montepulciano, Alicante, Ciliegiolo and Teroldeco), -- the flavors were so intense: ripe red fruit, chocolate and spice, that we would have pegged it for a California style wine. But try it, as we did, with hearty Italian food and you'll know that Italy is where these grapes really belong.

We shouldn't have been surprised that the wine was so good; after all, it hails from the same proprietors that own Poggio Il Castellare, producers of the Brunello that ranked #11 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 last year. But what definitely surprised us was the price we were able to work out - Only $14.99 on sale, for a wine that drinks like something twice the price! Needless to say, we stocked up on all we could, and suggest you do the same for some everyday wine that over-delivers each time we taste it.

Wine Spectator 90 Points -- Big and rich, with loads of blackberry, licorice and mineral character. Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Alicante, Teroldego, Ciliegiolo and Colorino. Best after 2008. 665 cases made. -JS

The Wine Spectator rated the 2007 vintage 94-97 points and Robert Parker rated the 2007 vintage 96 points! We think it's the best vintage since 1997!

We've been eagerly awaiting to the release of the 2007 Oakville East Exposure Cabernet Sauvignon. It's fourth vintage produced is easily it's best vintage to date. The vineyards are located on the eastern section of Oakville neighboring Screaming Eagle, Rudd, Dalla Valle, and Phelps Backus. Some of the fruit for the Oakville East was used for Cakebread Three Sisters and Dalla Valle Maya in the past. So, even though the winery is new the vineyards have been producing great wine for a long time.

The Oakville East is one of the top Cabs coming out of Napa
that is still under-the-radar at least with those who have not tasted the wine yet. As soon as we receive the new vintage we email those customers that have previously bought the wine and it seems every year we're selling more and more upon release.

On individual merits, this 2007 Cabernet blend stands strong, but it's the sum of the total which really ups the ante; gentle swells of blue and black fruit tickle the nose, as plushy waves of roasted plum, cedar and distinctive minerality coat the palate. Round, elegant tannins finely integrate with the intense concentration, balance, and an endless finish. We highly recommend this explosive Cabernet from one of the best Napa vintages in over a decade.

For Gary's own "Going Forward" wines, we're partnering with top quality wineries from the best growing regions to bring wine to you that dramatically over-delivers on flavor. We identify wineries in the very best regions of California for each grape variety -- Napa for Cabernet, the Russian River Valley for Pinot Noir, and for our inaugural Chardonnay, the Sonoma Coast.

The Sonoma Coast AVA stretches from the Carneros region at San Pablo Bay up the coast to Mendocino County and east over the Coastal range into the western half of Sonoma. The Sonoma Coast is a cool climate region with fog shrouded coastal microclimates, and rugged mountain tops and valleys. The days begin in bright sunshine, with the coastal fog bank out over the ocean. As the day warms, the cooling fog rolls in and blankets the Chardonnay vines, keeping them cool in the afternoons and evenings, producing ideal balance and ripeness.

Our Going Forward Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is the direct result of this spectacular Chardonnay growing region, and the expertise of the winemaking at our partner winery. The palate is all unctuous lush ripe pear and lemon curd, giving way to clean minerality on the finish. Everything about this wine tells you why we decided to begin making our inaugural "Going Forward" Chardonnay in the Sonoma Coast and nowhere else!

2009 Bordeaux Futures - 2009 Chateau Saint Pierre St Julien

http://www.garyswine.com/fine_wine/france/13366.html

Brand: Chateau Saint Pierre
Region: Bordeaux St Julien
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend
Style:
Red Wine
Price: $74.98
Reg: $95.00
ON SALE!

Robert Parker 94-98 Points

This has been a fabulous wine over recent vintages, but I do not think many consumers have caught on. Of course, there is far less of this classified-growth St.-Julien than of any of the Leovilles, Beychevelle, Talbot, Gruaud Larose, or Branaire Ducru. Unbelievably powerful, rich, and impressive, this may be the finest St.-Pierre ever made. An inky/purple color is followed by notes of creme de cassis, spring flowers, and forest floor, a layered, full-bodied, powerful mouthfeel, perfect balance, and extraordinary richness, purity, and unctuosity. This great St.-Julien should hit its peak in 7-10 years, and last for 30-50. Bravo! (Tasted two times.) Drink 2017-2067.

Wine Spectator 91-94 Points

Sultanas and subtle spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and excellent fruit concentration. Long and succulent. Stylish stuff.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 93-95 Points

Tasted at the UGC. Bright blackberry, boysenberry and minerals on the tightly wound nose. Good definition and lift, quite a classy Saint Julien nose. It has a beautifully balanced palate, ripe tannins, wonderful definition with a sensuality that I have never encountered before in St. Pierre. Plush and assured on the mineral-rich finish. Undoubtedly the finest St. Pierre that I have tasted. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17+/20 Points

Very deep dark crimson - glossy colour. Aromatic and lifted. A little bit brutal in its make-up but very ambitious and introvert. Solid and dry on the finish. Very drying finish. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2020-2032.

Decanter 17.5/20 Points

Black red, elegantly concentrated blackcurrant fruit, quite leafy and lifted with a touch of licquorice spice, both floral and a little exotic, lovely rich, ripe fruit and good future. Drink 2015-25.

Robert Parker 91-93 Points

The best Rouget I have ever tasted, the 2009 displays terrific aromas of kirsch liqueur and loamy soil as well as a plump, fat, luscious personality. With sensational concentration and purity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and an enormous fruit character, this beauty should drink well for 15 or more years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2025.

Wine Spectator 91-94 Points

Blueberry and mineral on the nose. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a fruity, vanilla and berry finish. Long. Superpolished and pretty.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 91-93 Points

Tasted at Chateau Clinet. The Rouget '09 has a fresh, well defined bouquet with wild strawberry, cherry and a touch of rose petal...very feminine and fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannins, just a little toasty and spicy, good weight, modern in style but well balanced with good acidity and delineation towards the finish with hints of bay leaf and spice. Cohesive, very good length. Look out for Rouget upping the ante over the next few years…this is just the beginning. Tasted April 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17/20 Points

Very thick. Perfumed. Very sweet and opulent and ambitious. A bit of tannin on the end. You could almost stand a spoon up in this. Clinet? Very rich. Pretty alcoholic finish but there is lots of rich fruit, too. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2015-2028.

Decanter 17.5/20 Points

Another fine wine from this now consistent (and still relatively good value) estate. Aromatic, opulent, the texture of the tannins fine. Long finish. Drink 2016-2030.

Licorice and tar, with hints of ripe berry. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and dense tannins. Yet it's all in near-perfect harmony. This has a new owner and it's even better.

Neal Martin Wine Advocate 95-97 Points

The minerality and stoniness really comes through on the nose of this Rieussec, more than the 2007. The palate is very well balanced with superb acidity, real tension, steely with great precision with notes of apricot, white peach and honey on the beautifully defined finish. Probably the best Rieussec since the astounding 2001.

Wine Spectator 92-95 Points

Lemon peel and pear tart on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with good acidity, lemon meringue flavors and a spicy finish.

Jancis Robinson 18/20 Points

Heavy and rich and wonderfully sumptuous. Great richness. Density and breadth. Still very chewy but there is lots here. Very rewarding. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2018-2036.

Decanter 18/20 Points

Massive, with great transformed level of alcohol, useful when the sugar content is so high too, a monument of a wine, but a wait of 10 years at least will be necessary to do justice to its majestic power.

Robert Parker 92-95 Points

Composed of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot, this large estate appears to have produced their greatest wine since the 1986. The alcohols came in at 13.9%, and the wine reveals extraordinary density, power, and richness as well as explosive fruit, and terrific acidity, intensity, and power. Yet it tastes like a crisp, delicate Margaux. Yields were 40 hectoliters per hectare. This outstanding 2009 should age nicely for 35-40+ years. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2050.

Wine Spectator 93-96 Points

Shows a lovely concentration of currant and blackberry. Hints of vanilla follow through to a full body, with layers of ripe fruit and fine, fruit-coated tannins. I love the ripe and pretty fruit to this. Very fruit-forward. The château cut back on the new wood, and went for a fruitier style. I like thatShows a lovely concentration of currant and blackberry. Neal Martin's Wine Journal 96-98 Points

Tasted at the chateau and UGC. A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot, with 10% vin de presse. The Merlot picked from 22nd to 25th September then 28th September until 1st October. The Cabernet picked 3rd October and from 5th until 11th October (no Cabernet Franc and the Petit Verdot, though ripe, just did not blend well), cropped at 41hl/ha. The nose is well defined, very classic in style with blackberry, black olive, graphite and an intriguing note of woodbines. This is a magnificent Rauzan-Segla, easily the best I have tasted at en primeur. Firstly, it is much more harmonious than usual at this nascent stage, the acidity level is just about perfect, there is a vibrancy that is really enthralling and the poise on the finish ranks alongside that of Chateau Margaux, tasted just before. The finish is very strong, slightly creamy in texture, but also superbly defined and with superb length. Very natural and refine, yet powerful. This may be the best Rauzan Segla that John Kolasa has made. Tasted March 2010

Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 Points

Dark crimson. Light and fragrant. Thick on the palate, almost soupy! Should give lots of pleasure - does not need food. One to drink at the bar... Lots of care in tannin management, I would have thought. A wine with real intensity. Date tasted 31st March 2010. Drink 2016-2026.

Decanter 18.5/20 Points

Fine dense red, beautifully poised, naturally concentrated wild roses Margaux nose, superb fragrance that leads to a finely polished palate with great depth and purity, a great vineyard expression, power and finesse all in balance, very good indeed. Drink 2015-35.

Robert Parker 92-95 Points

This masculine-styled Pomerol exhibits notes of iron, earth, vitamins, black cherries, and blackberries. It is reminiscent of a Trotanoy in terms of personality and appellation character. Full-bodied and super-dense with a boatload of tannin as well as unbridled power, richness, and depth, this 2009 will require patience (5-7 years), but should last for three decades or more. (Tasted once.)

Wine Spectator 95-98 Points

Offers fabulous aromas of crushed blackberry and blueberry, with lightly roasted coffee bean and black olive. Full-bodied, delivering polished, chewy tannins and a long, juicy finish. Rich and powerful. Blockbuster. Roasted fruit on this. Best ever from here?—J.S.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 91-93 Points

Tasted at JP Moueix. As usual, the Providence has a certain hubris on the nose, ripe plum and damson fruit, well defined with a touch of orange extract. Are there flirtations with some fresh prune notes here? The palate is full-bodied, almost thrusting tannins, flattering black cherry fruit, apricot and kirsch, firming up towards the rounded, peppery finish. Moderate length. Very fine. Tasted April 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17-/20 Points

Dark crimson. Another wine, like Hosanna, where the ripeness is extreme. Very sweet start. Big and inky and muscular. Pretty rude tannins on the finish. A bit of a big blusterer. A bit ungainly. Good for those who seek mass? A little bit of alcohol on the end. But solid true wine – not confected.

Buy Wine 2007 Petrolo Torrione Toscana at Gary's Wine and Marketplace NJ Wine Store

2007 Petrolo Torrione Toscana [SELL OUT ALERT!]
WS 94pt Italian Drinking Like a Bottle Double Its Price $1/btl Shipping on 6-packs, Free Shipping on Cases

Petrolo's Torrione is always one of the most anticipated Tuscan releases each year. And for a good reason: despite great reviews and scores in the nineties, it has maintained a price of $30-35 for several vintages. The 2007 vintage scored the highest rating from the Wine Spectator since 1997: 94 points! This is definitely one of those wines that drinks more like something nearly double its price.

The Torrione 2007 is made primarily from Sangiovese grapes from an area just outside Chianti Classico in Tuscany. The 2007 Torrione is spectacular with awesome concentration and that typical silkiness that Torrione normally shows. It's full-bodied Tuscan red that could easily rival a Brunello (also made from 100% Sanigovese).

Wine Spectator 94 points

Clear and precise, with beautiful aromas of plum, berries and chocolate. Full-bodied and refined, with a dense yet elegant palate of plum, chocolate and cherry. Long and caressing. Wonderfully polished. Very fine. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best after 2010. 3,750 cases made.-JS

Buy Wine Online 2008 Ocaso Malbec at http://www.garyswine.com

Category: Argentina
Size: 750 ml
Brand: Ocaso

Varietal: Malbec

Price: $9.99

ON SALE!

A great drinking wine with a price to match!

Malbec may have originally been associated with Cahors and Bordeaux in France, but it is the Mendoza region of Argentina where Malbec's greatest fame lies. Here on the eastern slope of the Andes mountains, Malbec produces wines of rich flavors, lush mouthfeel, and silky tannin. Ocaso Malbec has all of the best characters of Mendoza Malbec, and brings them all at a super price.

It is soft and flavorful with expressive notes of espresso, nutmeg, charred toast and black/blue fruit, in a medium bodied, smoothly structured package that leads to a long, savory finish. It is a great match to a wide range of foods, from Argentinean style parilla grilled meat to American BBQ to roast chicken and even rich pasta dishes.

Food Friendly, Drinks Great, Top Wine for the Summer

As Kathy Brindle, Gary's Wine Associate, discovered one night when she took a bottle home, it's all about versatility. "What really impressed me about the Ocaso Malbec was how food-friendly it was," Kathy says. "It stood up to a gorgonzola-topped grilled filet mignon, but it didn't overpower a side dish of angel hair pasta and summer veggies. And I could imagine how the ripe blackberry fruit flavors and long smooth finish would also make it a great match for BBQ chicken." This is a soft and pleasant red wine that pairs great with almost everything. Of course, it should be no surprise. It hails from the good-food-lovin' country of Argentina!

"2007 Cabs are getting a lot of attention right now, but when Robin came to me with her 2006 Blueprint, I was pleasantly amazed at the quality. Of all the '06 Napa Cabs I've tasted, this is by far one of the best wines for the price. You just have to try this for yourself. Outstanding." - Gary

Unparalleled History in Napa Valley

When we talk about forefathers of our country, we have endless numbers of people to thank for pioneering different industries. But for Napa winemaking, one of the true forefathers was Gustav Neibaum, the great-great grand-uncle of Robin Lail, steward of Lail Vineyards. Neibaum founded Inglenook vineyards in 1879, making history in this still-young winemaking region.

Today Robin carries the torch with Lail Vineyards where they make this amazing Blueprint Cabernet Sauvignon (an homage to her husband's profession of architecture) from both estate fruit and fruit from some well-respected growers throughout the Napa Valley appellation. With the help of well-known winemaker Philippe Melka (Vineyard 29, Bryant, Melka Metisse), Lail produces a beautiful Bordeaux-style blend with flavors and aromas of blueberry and fresh garden herbs and a long, smooth finish.

This Napa Cab is drinking amazingly right now ... a must-try!

One can't say enough about what proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard have accomplished at this estate since 1990. Regrettably, I am old enough to remember how horrible the wines were before the Cathiards purchased the property. They have fashioned one of the most consistently outstanding wines, both white and red, over the last two decades, and their 2009 probably eclipses any previous performance. An opaque purple color is followed by an explosive nose of graphite, black currants, licorice, incense, and a hint of black tea. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary density, unctuosity, and richness, yet it never comes across as heavy or overbearing. Deep and full-bodied with sensational concentration as well as remarkable purity and precision, this brilliant wine possesses the high, but sweet tannins that are a hallmark of the vintage, and exceptional delicacy allied to massive power and richness ... a rare combination indeed. This prodigious effort should drink well for 30-40 years. Bravo! (Tasted five times.) Drink 2010-2050.

Wine Spectator 95-98 Points

Clean. Blackberry and lightly toasted oak with coffee and cedar. Full-bodied and a very, very powerful structure. Blockbuster. Massive and dense, yet remains agile. A triumph for this estate.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-96 Points

Tasted at the chateau. Picked between 25th September and 17th October, 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot cropped at 32 hl/ha, this has a very sleek, well defined bouquet, very pure with dark berried fruits, just a hint of coca and dark chocolate powder. Very focused, very linear at the moment but developing a lovely saline/estuarine character towards the finish. The palate is full-bodied with very silky tannins, harmonious, sensuous, very good weight and acidity, layers of ripe black, coca-tinged fruit with a sense of nonchalance and self-assured swagger towards the finish. Very pure, very long on the finish, leaving the mouth tingling with pleasure. This is a very assured Smith Haut Lafitte. Tasted April 2010.

Jancis Robinson 16+/20 Points

Moderate and rather cool and intriguing on the nose. Some sweetness at first and then slightly inky. The tannins are far from the most supple but they just about do the trick without being too drying on the finish. Just a little bit gawky, and there's some alcohol on the finish. Date tasted 2nd April 2010. Drink 2016-2026.

Decanter 18/20 Points

Dense red, fine rich and wonderfully succulent and briary wild fruits nose, rich, robust vineyard fruit with internal spice, energy and depth. Drink 2016-30.

Life and vivacity and succulence here. This speaks to me – quite an achievement since it’s the penultimate wine tasted in a very long morning. Well done! Great succulence and freshness but no austerity.

Having just had the 2000 Branon, which performed unbelievably well, this is definitely a wine for connoisseurs to seek out. The problem is that just under 500 cases were made, all from relatively old vines planted in the early sixties. This blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc is from a parcel of the Branon vineyard sandwiched between Haut-Bailly and Malartic Lagraviere in the heart of Leognan. The 2009 reveals smoky, earthy, barbecue notes intermixed with creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, charcoal, and graphite. This hugely concentrated, intense, dense, full-bodied powerhouse possesses silky tannins, plenty of glycerin, an over the top, extravagantly rich mouthfeel, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. A potential legend in the making, this wine should drink well for 30+ years. (Tasted once.) Drink 2010-2040.

Wine Spectator 92-95 Points

Love the nose on this, with blackberry, licorice and stone. Full-bodied, with supersilky and ultrafine tannins. This wine goes on and on.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 91-93 Points

Tasted at Clos l'Eglise. This has a ripe black cherry, briary, redcurrant tinged bouquet with very fine definition and clarity. The palate is medium-bodied but with firm tannins, quite robust, a broad-shouldered, quite powerful Branon that grip the palate, earthy tones towards the weighty finish. Excellent. Tasted April 2010.

Decanter 16+/20 Points

Black red, big smoky Havana tobacco nose, full and with quite grippy Cabernet fruit, but good structure and will age well. Drink 2014-20.

Beautiful floral-infused black fruits jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Possibly richer, denser, and even more complete than the brilliant 2005 (although it is still too early to say that definitively), this is certainly a more opulent, succulent style of wine than even the 2005, which had surprising flesh for a wine from that vintage. The Right Bank consultant Stephane Derenoncourt has performed some magic here, as recent vintages attest, and the wines are often fairly priced as well. This full-bodied Prieure-Lichine should drink well for 20-25 years. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2035.

Wine Spectator 94-97 Points

Complex aromas of mineral, blueberry and currant follow through to a full body, with superfine tannins and a long, long finish. This is exceptional. Best of all time.

Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 Points

Very pale rim. Sweet, heady nose. Very sweet start on the palate and perhaps not quite enough refreshment factor? Tannins slightly rustic but there is lots of pleasure here. Date tasted 31st March 2010. Drink 2016-2027.

Decanter 17/20 Points

Deep red, fine floral wild roses Margaux nose, very good ripe fruit and harmonious Cabernet-Merlot blend, quite forward, attractive fleshy fruit and will age well. Drink 2014-20.

It's going to take a lot for this wine to equal or eclipse the 2005, but it is a different style of wine. While the 2005 is slightly more structured, with more aggressive tannin, this has more fat, texture, and more tactile magnetism going for it. I suppose the best thing is to own both. Opaque ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of charcoal, forest floor, and black fruits, the wine hits the palate with great intensity, a sumptuous texture, yet brilliant precision and purity. This is a superb wine that should drink well for 20-25 years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2035.

Wine Spectator 97-100

This is absolutely fabulous. I love the complex aromas of ripe fruit and fresh flowers that turn to mineral and raspberry, along with tannins on the finish. This changes all the time. Full-bodied and dense, but so beautiful and long. The layers of ultrafine tannins just turn off the tip of your tongue.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 93-95 Points

Tasted at a negociant. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot 4%, Merlot 35% and Cabernet Franc 8% picked between 29th September until 16th October. This has a ripe, black cherry, briary, graphite tinged bouquet that exudes purity, feminine charm and unlike some other Margaux wine, does not forget where it was born. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, slightly peppery entry, very fine but robust tannins, very focused with a sense of "controlled power" on the finish. This is a very classy, sophisticated Margaux demonstrating great persistency and elan. Excellent. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 Points

Lovely sap on the nose here - really appetising. Round and gentle - could do with just a tad more freshness perhaps. But there is so much crammed in here for the future... Persistent and promising. Date tasted 31st March 2010. Drink 2017-2032.

Decanter 17.5/20 Points

Fine dense red, strikingly vibrant cassis nose, very good clear fruit with density and length, quite tight now and will open up well and always be distinctively spicy. Drink 2015-24.

One of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, this may surpass the superlative 2007. It has a more understated nose at the moment, but is very well defined with honey, white peach, orange peel and crushed stones. The palate has a viscous entry, is very well balanced, very powerful with great depth and effervescent minerality. Layers of botrytis layer across the mellifluous finish that is beautifully defined and sensuous. Fabulous.

Wine Spectator 94-97 Points

Pear and lemon pie aromas and flavors. Full and powerful, with lots of sweet fruit and a long, spicy finish. Racy, layered and beautiful.

Jancis Robinson 18.5/20 Points

Big and rich and bold and overwhelming almost. A bit of spice and so much sugar! This deserves very high points for its combination of sweetness and purity. Great weight. Really very good indeed. Bravo AXA for allowing these decisions. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2016-2040.

Decanter 19/20 Points

As in 2008, a triumph! Glorious fruit content, nobility of body, balance, taste and aftertaste, perfect precise winemaking, immense future. Is it the best since 1899 or 1928? I say yes, without any doubt!

Bill Blatch

Pierre Montégut has had some challenges since arriving at Suduiraut in 2002. But to have brought off a success like 2009, with the rapidity of the botrytis stretching this large estate’s systems to the limit, is a real feat. His ‘09 continues the trend of more concentrated and sweeter wines since 1997 than previously, and, at 160 g/l, it is on a par with Rieussec. However, the resemblance ends there, and with slightly more alcohol and slightly less acidity, the structure of the Suduiraut seems softer and more frankly powerful. There is something of the 1990 in this. The usual minty and lively flavour character of Suduiraut is currently buried under all this power but you see it all there and it will be pushing progressively through during the coming months in barrel.

The highest levels of polyphenols ever measured at Lynch Bages (20% higher than any prior vintage) are found in the 2009, which achieved 13.4% natural alcohol, and a normal pH of 3.64. Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is the greatest Lynch Bages since the outstanding duo of 1989 and 1990. The black/purple-tinged 2009 exhibits a glorious perfume of graphite, black currants, and subtle smoke, powerful, thick, unctuously textured flavors, huge yet sweet tannins, fabulous purity, and a finish that lasts 40-45 seconds. Five to eight years of patience will be required, but this is a 30-40-year wine from this popular estate run by the affable and highly respected Cazes family. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2050.

Wine Spectator 96-99 Points

The nose shows amazing aromas of mint, spices and currant, with underlying licorice and tar. Full-bodied, with amazing fruit and a long, long finish. Powerful. Blockbuster, but balanced. So structured. Lynch has not made a wine like this since perhaps 1989 or 1982. Better than Wine of the Year 1985 Lynch.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-96 Points

Tasted at the château and UGC. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, raised in 70% new oak. Merlot was cropped from the 28th to 30th September and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked from the 6th to the 12th October. The nose soars from the glass, pure blackberry, briary, pencil lead and a touch of tobacco. Very fine definition: reminiscent of the 2006 but with a little more horsepower. The palate is full-bodied with very well integrated new oak that really sings with the concentrated black fruit and does not disguise the minerality in this wine. Tons of freshness, that acidity really driving the wine to the finish and then the persistency is superb. Still very linear, with a strictness that is seductive. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17/20 Points

Dense crimson. Rich and spicy and lifted. Really rather flirtatious. Not heavy or dense but very nicely balanced without aggressive notes of rough tannin or greenness. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2016-2028.

Decanter 18/20 Points

Dense purple red, concentrated Cabernet cassis plus rich spiciness, big volume on the palate, expressive elegance over the natural vigour, lifted and long. Drink 2015-30.

It's no surprise that proprietor Alfred Tesseron has produced a possibly perfect 2009. He's been on a roll since 1994, and no other producer has done more work in the vineyard than Tesseron, who has moved to 100% bio-dynamic farming, reduced yields drastically, and instituted a draconian selection process. This vineyard, which sits on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, has produced a 2009 of extraordinary intensity and purity. It is outrageously concentrated, with silky tannin (the sweetest I have ever tasted in a Pontet-Canet as well as the highest measured), an opaque purple color, and copious notes of graphite, cassis, licorice, and subtle smoke and forest floor. Full-bodied and unctuously textured with striking purity and definition, it is a wine of colossal weight as well as elegance (in itself a poster boy for this paradox in 2009). This brilliant Pauillac requires a decade of cellaring despite its voluptuous texture. It should evolve for 50-75 years. (Tasted four times.) Drink 2020-2095.

Wine Spectator 95-98 Points

Delivers aromas of blueberry skin, fresh flowers, licorice and raspberry sauce, with something exotic underneath it all. Full-bodied, with wonderful clarity and freshness. It's like looking at a full moon on a crystal-clear night in the country. This keeps coming at you, with tannins and ripe fruit. What balance, yet power to the wine. I love how the wine changes and challenges you with every sip.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-97 Points

Tasted on four separate occasions, including twice at the chateau, though actually showing best at a negociant. Representing 80% of the crop, 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The nose is very pure, blackberry, small black cherries, a touch of griottes, a hint of cedar and mint. Quite feminine. Not too powerful. Very fine definition. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, insistent grip and good acidity, perhaps one of the most structured, masculine Pauillac 2009s but that does not detract from the finesse and poise. But certainly there is backbone here that segues into a tertiary note towards the finish. Very focused, more minerally elements towards the finish, hints of black truffle and smoke towards the finish. Very good persistency, somehow, an assured Pontet Canet. Superb. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 18/20 Points

Yields a bit more than in 2008, with more grand vin too. 81 ha total vineyards. This year they are trying for 24 ha by horse. They can't tell us the alcohol but think it's 13-13.5%.Very dark crimson. Firm and broad and very lively with real vibrant elderberry nose - there IS a bit of extra vitality in this wine! Very very nice and satisfying indeed. There is life to this and great breadth and depth. Intense richness that seems to come from the fruit rather than from winemaking. Something of Lafite's complexity and integrity. Plus Mouton's richness. Dry finish. Very well done. But it is not a wine you want to undertake young - still lots to sort out. Much less open than most. Dense - really quite dry on the end but appetising though very long term. Muscular. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2020-2035.

Decanter 18.5/20 Points

Dense colour and pure Cabernet blackcurrant fruit beautifully extracted with great length and perfect harmony, great purity of expression, exuberant yet restrained, great future. Drink 2016-30.

Robert Parker 91-93 Points

Robert Parker 90-92 Points

The 2009 Batailley should give the 2005 a run for its money. It is a slightly sweeter, richer, softer wine (somewhat atypical for Batailley as it is generally one of the more structured and backward of the Pauillacs) exhibiting a dense purple color as well as notes of smoke, blackberries, cassis, charcoal, and oak. Deep, full-bodied, rich, and already seductive, it should have 25+ years of evolution ahead of it. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2035.

Wine Spectator 92-95 Points

Currant and blackberry on the nose, with hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with big, chewy tannins. This is the biggest Batailley in years. Lots of improvement here.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-96 Points

Tasted at the château and UGC. Picking commenced with the Merlot on the 24th September, for the Cabernet we started on the 29th September, finishing on 11th October and the Petit Verdot the 12th October. A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this Batailley has a ripe nose of blackberry, black plum, sandalwood, mint and just a hint of white flowers. Not a huge intense nose, but much more refined, very Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded and quite supple tannins, yet good backbone as always on this Batailley. Very harmonious, insistent but gentle grip, a slightly powdery texture towards the finish lending a pleasurable sense of umami. Very focused and elegant towards the finish, classic in style and yet very "2009". This has the potential to be a benchmark Batailley after bottling (just be prudent on the oak please!) Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17 Points

Bright crimson. Pretty deep. Succulent and sumptuous on the nose. Lots of sweetness. Just a little attenuated but should deliver satisfaction eventually! Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2019-2030.

Decanter 16.5 Points

Dense red, good leafy blackcurrant nose, good broad plummy fruit, smooth texture attractive leathery spice and good length. Drink 2015-24.
